Now I know you all come to read my blog because you
Ok, so maybe not but that's beside the point. Last week, I found the American Cancer Society's recommendation for the number of fruit and vegetables to try to eat every day. Can you guess? Yep, 5. That's not even close to the USDA's recommendation of 9. Anyway, so my first thought was, what a great premise for a blog post.
Then yesterday morning E (my 18 month old son) recommended we vlog about it. So we did...at 7:30 in the morning we vlogged about fruits and veggies. I know you're just dying to see it and hear what we have to say so without any further delay...
It seems like slowly I'm reforming the way I eat and drink. First giving up soda, which I'm still going strong on and now this! What's next? Giving up sugar? Ok, slow down...one step at a time.
So now it's your turn...how do you get your fruits and veggies in? Any tips and tricks for adding more to our diets?

YES. Way to go! I thought I ate so many vegetables, but when I tried counting servings in December, I realized I frequently fell short of a true 6-8 servings. Just like you say in the video, I was surprised and made the effort to get it in! THanks for the challenge- -I'll definitely start taking note again.
ReplyDeleteYeah! Let me know how you do. E and I are definitely back on the Fruits and Veggies bandwagon!
DeleteI made a conscious effort to track my fruit and veggie intake for awhile. I found the best way is to try to get at least one veggie and fruit in at every meal. Breakfast is usually the hardest unless I do veggie eggs. I like to put grated carrots or zucchini in my oats, too, for an easy way to sneak some in. I also try to get at least one salad a day. Once you get into the swing of things it gets easier!
ReplyDeleteGrated carrots in your oats? I never thought of that. Do you taste them at all?
DeleteIt's hard to get those fruits & veggies - it takes time. One way I've upped my numbers is to have a green smoothie in the a.m. for breakfast. It's basically a sweet, blended, giant salad! Add to that a veggie-filled lunch (usually another salad, but in a more traditional form), fruit as a snack and as dessert for dinner (where we'll have 2 different veg in lieu of starch, most often) and you've got WAY more than 5-9 servings.
ReplyDeleteWhat green veggies go in your smoothie? Do you have a special blender to get them to smoothie consistency? I've always thought about that but wasn't sure how it would taste. Does it fill you up?
DeleteI load up a smoothie in the afternoon with whatever I am lacking haha. But I agree ... it's surprising how easily it is to fall into not eating enough of the fruits/veggies.
ReplyDeleteI saw your Q above this ... I use spinach or kale in my smoothie. I have a Ninja blender and it gets it totally smooth. I can taste the greens at all especially when I add banana or strawberries.
The Ninja huh? Did you get that at Target? I'm so nervous to try spinach in a smoothie. I guess I should just bite the bullet and try it. :)
DeleteThat's awesome that you're getting back to eating a lot of fruits/veggies! I just recently started following more of a Paleo diet, so I'm eating fruits/veggies at every meal. And honestly, I'm not doing much to them...I've started buying from my local Farmer's Market, so all of the fruits/veggies are so fresh and flavorful, they're almost good by themselves. Now for broccoli and zucchini/squash, I bake them with some garlic/spices, but other than that, I just act like my fruit is dessert (hard to do, I know) and that's that. Good job!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of baking the broccoli, How long and at what temp do you roast them at? What spices do you use?
DeleteHonestly, I don't time a lot of stuff...I know that doesn't help you. I typically just turn on my oven at 350 and once it's preheated, bake the broccoli or squash/zucchini for about 15 minutes or so. Last time, I threw some minced garlic in the pan with the broccoli...but make sure to toss around a few times, some of my garlic got burnt! ;) And for the squash/zucchini mixture, I bought some Mrs. Dash salt-free seasoning blend...got a bunch of spices mixed together and I love it!
DeleteI actually eat a lot of fruits and veggies. In an ideal world, I like to have a green smoothie for breakfast, a GIANT salad full of veggies (and beans or tofu or something for protein) for lunch, and then dinner I cook veggies to go with whatever else we're having. It can be kind of expensive though and we're on a tight budget at the moment so I usually eat leftovers for lunch instead of a salad.
ReplyDeleteMy fave way to eat veggies right now are carrot "fries" (just bake them in stick-form in the oven with some seasoning and roasted cauliflower. I'm a firm believer that roasting makes almost every veggie better. :)
You're point about the expense of healthy eating is a great point.
DeleteI was thinking about it at the grocery store. It's probably contributing to why obesity is such an epidemic. (sorry my spelling stinks today)
Oh man... 5? all 5 in one day? Sheesh... I'm gonna have to make a conscious effort to do this. Thanks for the reminder. Great post, great share.
ReplyDeleteI know!! That's what I noticed. I was desperately lacking.
DeleteThanks for the love!
I definitely don't eat enough fruits and veggies - I need to work harder on that! Keep the tips coming about how to do a better job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment love! I will definitely keep 'em coming. I've got a few tips for having more veggies readily available for toddlers. :)
