What's In A Name?

If I tell you that I’m a “runner” what do you visualize? Someone like this? Do you think of someone that can bust out an 8 mile run without sweating? How about someone that can kill an 8 min mile without batting an eye?

Well guess what..that’s not me. Nope, not even close. I run about 12 miles average in a typical week.  In the beginning I was lucky to get 2 or 3 in a week.

What if I tell you I’m a triathlete…Do you think of this? An amazing elite triathlete.

Guess Again. I’m a middle-to-end of the pack kind of girl. I’m happy with accomplishing and strive to try to achieve. Triathlons always sounded like a scary thing to me so knowing I'm completing them is a huge step.

Triathlete
My point is this…these titles/names.."Runner"…"Triathlete"…fitness junkie..are not meant to exclude. They are not meant to keep you from your goals.

If you want to run…run. If you want to workout..do it. Sometimes the scariest step is the first one.

I’m not talking about signing up for a marathon or an Ironman, I know tons of “runners” who have never run a race and don’t intend to. I know many runners that run just a mile at a time.

I heard someone at the gym today say…

"I would run that 5k but I’m not a runner."

Guess what..that’s an excuse.

Let’s play a game..get up right now..and run to the front door. Go ahead, I’ll wait….*Running There *Running Back

Did you do it? Well congratulations..you’re a "runner". Welcome to the club! Now that we’ve gotten over that hurdle, you’re free to run as much or as little as you want.

I know..it’s scary to think about but taking that first step will make you feel so good, may even motivate you to take another step and another.

I have lots of "first steps" I want take.  I have an entire Pinterest Board dedicated to my #FitFluential #FitnessBucketlist of things that I WILL get to at somepoint in my life.  Do they scare me?  Some of them absolutely do but deep down I know I can do it and therefore I will.

  1. Agreed!

"Runners" come in all shapes and sizes and so do their training programs (if they even have one).

Like you I am not a "high mileage" mum at the moment but that doesn't make me any less of a runner than when I am. I love running more and more every day and its a big part of who I am whether I'm running a couple of Ks or a marathon!

I have a list of running goals for every distance from 5k - marathon. I also have a list of races that I would love to do (Disney, NY, Paris, Gold Coast etc)

You have inspired me to get on Pintrest and put it all together like that... You have such an awesome variety of goals. I would love to "tri" but I am terrified of the bike!!!!

    1. I completely agree about the bike. It still scares me. It is definitely my weakest link

  2. I once saw a quote that said if you run, you're a runner... it had some more stuff to it, but its so true. If you are an Olympic marathoner or a mom who runs a few miles a week, you are both part of the awesome community of runners! That's what makes running so great :)

  5. Doesn't matter if you run a mile or 26...if you run, you're a runner!
