Triathlon Training in Full Swing

A few months back, I wrote a post about triathlon: Ditch Your Fear and Tri with the goal of hopefully showing, at least one person, that competing in a triathlon is obtainable.  In June, I was browsing the blog archives and came across that post and it occured to me I hadn't signed up for one yet.  So I did!  I'm excited to say that end of July I'll be competing in a Sprint Tri here in the St. Louis area.

I know sometimes the most overwhelming part of anything is just getting started.  Not knowing where to look or what to ask.  I've been asked to share my training plan before and I'm finally getting around to it.

Now what's important to realize as you're looking at it is that it's designed for me and my life.  I would like to think it's a great start for anyone who wants to put a plan together but you have to do it with your goals in mind.

My goal for this tri is simple: Finish.  I haven't been swimming as much as I'd like and I've just recently started to spend time on my bike again so I'm just wanting to enjoy the experience. So my plan isn't crafted to win by anymeans.  I would say it would be good for a beginner or some one who has competed in a few triathlons. My ultimate goal, in a few years, life permitting will be to compete in a Half Ironman but for now, I'm content with just participating!

Triathlon Training Plan

Do you have any triathlons on your summer schedule?  Have you ever wanted to do one?  What's holding you back?  What questions do you have about triathlon training?  Let's talk!

  1. I would love to do a tri one day, but my running is a work in progress and I'm not a strong enough swimmer by any means, but that doesn't mean that I won't get there one day! Kick butt! Can't wait to hear how it goes.

    1. Swimming and biking are definitely my worst legs. I know just enough to muddle through the swim. :)

  2. I've completed an Olympic distance triathlon years ago but would love to do another one. You're right - getting started is the hardest part (and getting your head around all the gear that's involved). I think what's holding me back right now is figuring out to fit training into my schedule because it is a commitment. I always assumed that Tris would have to wait until my kids are a bit older.

  3. Congrats on the training plan. Yikes, I don't know if a Tri is in my future. I'm working on getting faster and doing longer distances. Maybe one day, but for the immediate future that is my focus for the entire year. Faster and further! Happy Training!

  5. Training looks great!!! Look forward to reading more about this adventure. I just finished my 1st triathlon in June and was so happy it was done. Swimming is so hard for me both mentally and physically. When I finished I said I would not do another one, but now that it has been a month I am thinking in the next few years I will do atleast one more but I am going for the half ironman this time.

  6. That looks like a great training plan. Nice to see you take one day off completely.

I've done two triathlons. Finding the time and, um, desire to swim has been my problem. Plus I find that I have a lot off difficulty with my exercise induced asthma. So, I stick mostly with running and cycling.

    1. I'm with you on the asthma. I have to take my inhaler to every race. It can make competing VERY difficult.

  7. I want to do a half ironman someday too... but for now, I need to get through my first tri! Thanks for sharing your plan. Looks similar to mine... I've basically cut back my running a bit to add in 2 spin classes and 2 swims a week, and have been trying for one brick as well (outdoor bike to run, or swim to run). I'm excited to enter the tri world. :)

  8. Saw this pinned on Pinterest - it's one of my dreams to do a sprint triathlon, but the time isn't right yet!
