The Motivation Behind The CrossFit Games

At 10:30 last night when I FINALLY had a chance to sit for a minute, I turned on the TV and it defaulted to ESPN. Can you tell my husband watched TV last? But it turned out to be a good thing. The CrossFit games were on and I started watching and was hooked. I really needed to go to bed but I couldn’t stop watching. I just got more and more excited. Now, I have to say I’ve never had the chance to do CrossFit for a number of reasons but I’m really dying too.

Earlier this summer the FitFluential clan actually got to attend the games and I watched clips of it live on the internet but actually getting to follow it and watch the different events makes it all that more real.
I also got to learn more about the women competing and then I got really excited so I thought I’d share with you some of the reasons why I think CrossFit is so motivating.
  • It’s a lifestyle, it’s a club – Watching these people compete you see, very quickly that they are part of community and a support system that is far and above what you get just going to the gym. The stories that were told about their training centers back home were awesome.
  • You don’t have to be good at any one sport – There are sooo many good athletes out there that just never found that one sport to latch on to. If you’re one of those people, you should DEFINITELY be trying CrossFit. It’s all about Strength, Flexibility, Agility and number of other characteristics that make up a “Fit” person. You don’t have to be good at running or swinging a bat or biking. Just be fit.
  • CrossFit Doesn’t Discriminate – I LOVED learning about the competitors because what you quickly saw is that many of them are well into their 30’s, moms, dads, etc. You don’t have to be 20 something to excel at CrossFit. That’s right up my alley (and maybe yours too).
Ok, now like I said, I’ve never tried it. I have not been paid to write this. I just found it so inspirational last night, I had to talk about it and I would love some input from those of you that have done it.
If you’d like to try CrossFit and it’s a financial scenario for you, make you keep an eye on sites like Living Social and Groupon. I have heard that you can sometimes run across discounts. I know I am! I think if you’re going to attend with someone that already attends, you can get the first week free (I think). Don’t quote me on that.
What do you like about it? Am I right about my assessment?

  1. 425 OGD crossfit (in other words: Shane and Nat's garage) is open to you anytime...and free of charge!

  2. I've been doing CrossFit for a year now and LOVE it! It's a great all around workout and you are so right about the community aspect. It's how we've made a lot of new friends in our community!

  3. I'd say you are pretty spot on. I joined a local CrossFit box back in June. We are lucky to have TWO CrossFit gym options within 3 miles of where we live so we tried them both out and one was clearly a better for us than the other (the coaches were a lot more intentional about teaching you each movement as a beginner). It has been WONDERFUL. I have always wanted to be all around fit but there is no way that I would've been able to learn some of these exercises on my own (like olympic weight lifting).

I have really been encouraged by the other CrossFitters, too. They may look mean when they throw around hundreds of pounds of weight, but everyone I have met is happy to help and answer questions (what are those things on your wrist?). They've never made me feel lame for being the slowest person in a team workout or having to scale down the weight in a workout. So that's a bonus.

I will say, it's not cheap. Since each gym has a different owner, the discounts they give will vary. Ours gives discounts if you are/were military, police or fireman, as well as if you're a student. We've had to make sacrifices in other budget areas to be able to afford to go to CrossFit but it has been worth every penny. Since classes are normally around 8 people, we do get a lot of attention and help from our coaches.

Definitely try it out! I guess it's not for everyone, but I think it IS something that anyone can do.

Our gym also has CrossFit for kids! It's a family friendly place. A kid (maybe 11?) and his parent worked out together in a class one day. I don't think they do the heavy lifting- mostly the gymnastics related aspects of body-weight movements like pulls ups and squats and all that. But anyway, that kid could bust out burpees like crazy. Pretty cool.

    I think I've gone on long enough....:-/

  4. Ha! I also turned the TV on to ESPN and saw the CrossFit games and was so intrigued! I have often heard the term CrossFit thrown around but never really knew what it was. It looks awesome and like something I would love to do. But, just as I love yoga and pilates and so many other things that I never have time for (golf and tennis come to mind), I know I can't add another thing to my already-overflowing-plate right now. Someday, though...!!

  5. I've never tried Crossfit either and am sooooooo intrigued by it. I do want to try it and luckily there are a few boxes near my house. It does intimidate me but learning more about it through Fitfluential folks and from watching the CrossFit games, I feel more comfortable because I love the community that surrounds it.
