Featured Blogger: Sarah Canney

It's Friday, so that means another great blogger and again, I'm super excited to feature Sarah.  Not only is she an amazing mom, and runner but her SUPER strong spirit is sure to inspire you!  She is an amazing person that I'm sure you will love as much as I do!

My husband, Mark and I met in college and have been married eight years. We have a three year old daughter, Sophia and a four month old son, Jack. We love that where we live in New Hampshire affords us easy access to the ocean, the lakes and mountains (all about a 30 min. drive away). We love getting outside as a family.

Outside of Fitness what are your favorite things to do?
I love all things creative/crafty/sewing. If I didn’t spend so much time running I would probably spend a lot more time with my sewing machine, knitting needles or a glue gun. I also really like decorating and organizing my home.

Best Celebrity Encounter ever?
When I was in college I went to visit my friend in LA. She was a production assistant for the show Entourage and she had to deliver a script to Mark Wahlbergs house and I went with her. We drove in through the gate, unfortunately his assistant came out to get the script so I didn’t actually get to meet him. But I came close!

- Blogging since January 2012

Why did you start blogging?
When I became a stay at home mom I found that I had all these (what I thought were amusing) inner monologues going on and no one to share them with. I started writing them down in a word document and eventually thought, why don’t I put these on a blog. So I did. As a former high school English teacher I found it a great creative outlet, and as a runner a great way to stay accountable to my goals.

How did you pick your blog name?
Originally my blog was called Chronicles of Runner-Mom. I took some time off from blogging in 2011, but returned to it in early 2012. When I started blogging again I changed the name to RUNFAR Girl. RUNFAR was my vanity license plate for quite a while and I identify much more with that title than the one I had picked earlier.

What has been your biggest blogging related accomplishment?
Women’s Running Magazine featured me as one of their Running Goddesses, which was pretty cool. But
what I love most about blogging is the people I’ve made friends with. Some I’ve met in person and others I can’t wait to meet. It is such a great community!

When was the last time you turned your mobile phone off (not just on silent)?
Actually, last week. My four month old son is about to have surgery (I’ve been telling his story on my blog) and we found out the afternoon before his scheduled surgery that it had been postponed. I was pretty upset. I was mentally and emotionally prepared to go through it and to have it delayed was devastating. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, even people in my own family. I shut my phone off and went to bed early. But otherwise, I’m on my phone a lot...too much.

What motivates you to exercise?
Setting goals for myself is a huge motivator. If I have a race goal in mind it gets me out the door. I also feel motivated by just getting outside, I love the outdoors.

What fitness activities do you engage in?
Mostly running. Running is my passion. My husband has always been into weight-lifting and is a certified personal trainer and is CrossFit certified, so I join him sometimes in his workouts. We also do a lot of hiking as a family, small hikes that our three-year old can manage on her own two feet and big ones where we pack the kids up on our backs and hike 4,000 to 6,000 feet.

What are your fitness goals for 2013?
My goal for this year is to run a 3:30 marathon.

What fitness related achievement are you most proud of?
I think my first marathon, though it wasn’t my fastest, was probably my proudest fitness accomplishment. I was in recovery for anorexia when I decided I wanted to run a marathon, but my doctors wouldn’t allow it. They wanted to see me healthy before I did any running. I was able to turn things around, gain weight and get to a healthy place physically and mentally; healthy enough to run a 3:51 marathon.

What Olympic sport would you like to try?
Basketball. I always dreamed I’d be on the Women’s Olympic team. I used to have gold medal ceremonies in my room when I was 12. I’d get out the bathroom stool and stand on that and sing the National Anthem.

What is your Fitness Mantra?
I have a lot of different ones, but “Run the race set out for you.” is the one that I keep coming back to. Lately though, I’ve been repeating the mantra “chase it down.” It applies to the workout itself and also to my dreams and goals as a runner.

What job/chore have you been procrastinating?
Laundry. Ugh. I wish I could press pause on the laundry.  (I'm with you Sarah!)

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned since becoming a mom?
Let it go. I’ve learned to let go of so much that used to bother me. I’m much more laid-back than I
was before becoming a mom.

What advice would you give soon to be or new moms?
Be consistent. There are so many baby-rearing and parenting methods out there and it can be so tempting to try them all. If you do you’ll wind up with a very confused newborn. I did that with my first. If one thing didn’t seem to work (as in it didn’t work fast enough for me) then I’d switch to the next method. With my second I’ve been consistent and it has been so much easier.
