Featured Blogger...Katy Widrick

Katy Widrick

Blog: Bug Child | Twitter: @Kwidrick or @BugChild | Facebook |

You might know her best from KatyWidrick.com but did you also know she's a striving fit mom over at BugChild.com?  Katy is a working mom who constantly strives for a healthy lifestyle and strives to promote it to others (founder of #FitBlog Chats).

I'm 32 (turning 33 soon) and married to an absolute rock star named Lucas. We have a 4-month-old daughter named Audrey who is the love of our lives. We also have two dogs (Faegan and Junior) and two cats (Travers and Laila). We live outside of Orlando, Florida but are originally from the Northeast.

If your life had a sound track what song would you pick for it?
My soundtrack would be something upbeat, current and funky...probably something Top 40 from P!nk or Britney Spears. Although these days, “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson really speaks to me! I'm a new mom who is trying to fit in fitness while working full time, running two blogs and being involved in a lot of social activities.

Outside of fitness, what are your favorite things to do?
I love to dance, and try and get in as many classes as I can. Technically, that's fitness, but I really do it more for fun. I also love blogging and everything that comes with it.

What TV show are you embarrassed about watching?
I own my TV watching habits, even the bad ones. But I'm a little embarrassed about watching Teen Mom.

How long have you been blogging?
I launched my first blog in 2007. It has morphed and changed through the years! I launched a pregnancy/baby blog in 2011.

Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging because I had just taken on a new job that was outside of a newsroom and I wanted to still be able to share my opinion on current events. Quickly, that changed because I became very passionate about healthy living and weight loss. And now, my blog is really more of a guide to using social media and technology (but still geared toward healthy living bloggers).

What has been your biggest blogging related accomplishment?
I think being able to help support my blogging community through speaking/presentations, chats (#Fitblog), helpful posts (media kit, ad network) has been the biggest accomplishment. It's been great to start emerging as a go-to source!

What social media platform/technology do you find most confusing?
Google +. I want to get it. I just don't. (You're not alone Katy)  :)

What motivates you to workout?
I work out because it makes me feel great. I love seeing my muscles grow and get stronger, and knowing that I could, at any time, run without keeling over. Now that I'm a mom, I work out because I want her to value her body and its potential, and I need to lead by example

What are your favorite activities to do?
I'll try anything! My regular routine includes running, swimming, biking and dance, but I also love being in the gym for strength training or doing a fitness DVD like TurboFire or 30-Day Shred.

What are your fitness goals for 2013?
I took a year off of running when I was pregnant, so 2013 is all about getting back in shape for a half marathon (I have done three before baby). I'm up to 2 miles without a break (yay!) and have a 10K scheduled for March. I'd also love to complete a few triathlons.

What fitness related achievements are you most proud of?
It's hard to choose, but I think finishing my first half marathon was my biggest fitness achievement. I'd never considered myself a runner but when I crossed the finish line that day, I was more proud of myself than ever before.

If labor and delivery count, THAT was my biggest achievement. I had my daughter without medication and was more sore from pushing her out than any other workout of my life

What is one chore you're procrastinating doing?
I HAVE to clean out my linen closet. It's really the only junk area of my house (I'm kind of crazy about clutter) but it's a disaster zone.

What is your "go to" comfort food?
Just one? Meanie. OK, it would probably be pizza.

What is the most important lesson you've learned since becoming a mom?
I'm still learning every day. But I am trying to be better about appreciating each moment for what it is, and not stressing about how quickly she's growing up or wishing time would move more slowly.

What advice would you give to soon-to-be or new moms?
My advice to other moms, especially those that are Type A like me, is that whatever your journey is, you're doing a great job. So many people tried to tell me to relax or rely on my instincts, which I understand and comes from a good place. But my instincts were to read every book and to do everything “right.” With four months of experience behind me, I can completely admit that I didn't need to be so uptight about everything but at that moment, in my life, having a plan was exactly what I needed.

Oh, and time flies. I'm so proud of my baby for all of her achievements but so sad that my newborn is growing up so fast!
