Ha! I'm joking. :) With both E and Allie, I was induced. With E it was because my blood pressure had risen to much and they were afraid of Preeclampsia. With Allie, it was a scheduled induction.
My husband and I went in at 8:30 last Tuesday morning and I was getting Pitocin by 9:00. It took all day to go from the 3 cm I was when I got there to 6 cm when I finally started pushing. For the majority of the day, we slept. I felt contractions but they were manageable.
Getting the epidural was not fun. My husband wasn't even allowed to stand close to me while I was getting it because they've had too many husbands faint or vomit. I won't go into detail but I will say that the short amount time that it took to get the epidural was the most pain I felt through all of this but worth it.
After a few more hours of labor I had still only gotten to 6 cm dilated after waiting a little while longer, the doctor did some checking and decided to go ahead and let me try pushing. I knew my body was ready because I started to shake uncontrollably and got nauseas like I did with E. They gave me some Zofran which helped a lot! I pushed through 2 contractions and before I knew it Allie was here!
There were pros and cons from pushing at 6 cm..problem was Allie didn't have ample time to "prepare" to come into the world.
- As a result they had to put her on a respirator for about 10 minutes. The entire time, I'm just sitting there begging to hold her.
- The Pro, she didn't have to spend a lot of time in the birth canal so she didn't get all banged up or get conehead.
Either way, she adjusted well and was stabilized and we became a family of four.
I came out of the experience pretty good, all things considered. I have a couple stitches but am feeling pretty good a week later. I have no idea how far I am from my pre-baby weight. I don't own a scale so it will have to wait till I can get to the gym.
In the meantime, I did try to get some pictures of both kids together and well.....this is how that worked out. Not really successful but still priceless.
Our current challenge is figuring out how to keep up with E while giving Allie the 1:1 time she needs and that we need. Breastfeeding is already proving to be challenging because what it means for us is that I'm the only one that can feed her which limits how we divide and conquer. So we might start pumping and going to a bottle but I'm holding off as long as possible. The doctors asked me to try to hold off about 6 weeks or so but we'll see if that happens. I breastfed E till he was 9 months and have a goal of 6 with Allie, although 9 would be great, I'm just not sure I see that happening.
We're also going to try Moms On Call Schedule starting next week. My SIL swears by it and I figured it can't hurt. Have you ever used their schedules?
Anyway, I can't complain, life is good. I'm very blessed to have such a healthy and happy little family (husband included). We'll figure this out, but I'd love your tips and tricks for managing multiple kids.
So much going on! Hope you're having a good week!

Wow what a great story! So glad it went well for you! And you do look great!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm feeling pretty good!
DeleteThanks for sharing your story! In my opinion pumping and doing bottles sounds like a lot more work than breastfeeding but you have to figure out what works for you. I breastfed my 2nd and got really good and breastfeeding while doing pretty much anything--cooking dinner, playing games, walking around, etc. If you don't have a newborn carrier, get one now! I loved the Moby Wrap for newborns and it wasn't even expensive.
ReplyDeleteI have a bjorn but I'm not happy with the way Allie sits in it at this age. I feel like the wrap would be a better option.
DeleteWhat a beautiful family! Congratulations and welcome to the world little Allie!
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
DeleteGorgeous Family!! Congrats on the new addition :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! She's doing so well.
DeleteHi Katie. Congratulations! I find it interesting that you're so into fitness but you don't own a scale. Is there a reason for that?
ReplyDeleteFitness and a scale don't have to go hand in hand :) The scale can't tell you how many reps you can do of weights, or how fast you can run, or how well your clothes fit. You can judge those things separately without constantly obsessing over aiming for a number that society deems acceptable :) I have a scale and RARELY use it. I stress less that way, that number doesn't tell me anything (and muscle weighs more than fat, so when tying it in with fitness, the scale can be deemed irrelevant- better to look at body fat composition)
DeleteHonestly, if I want to know what I weigh I just go to the gym. That way I might as well workout while I'm there. ;) The one they have is a medical one so I know it's good.
DeleteMaybe I'm cheap but I just don't see the need to spend money on one for home.
The reason I asked is because I've recently found myself obsessing over the number on the scale. This past week I finally took everyone's advice to just stay off the scale after 2 years of constant weighing. So its refreshing to know that someone who is really in shape doesn't even own a scale.
DeleteThanks for sharing your labor & delivery story. Isn't Pitocin a nasty B?! I had epidurals with both of my girls and never regretted them for a moment. With my first I had been laboring all night and just couldn't relax between the contractions any more. After I got the epidural, I was able to take a nap and then things progressed very quickly. With my second, they started Pitocin because my water broke but I wasn't having regular contractions. After a few hours of the Pitocin, I needed some help. Funny thing, I didn't even have the epidural for a full hour. As soon as I got it, I dilated all the way in no time. No nap the second time around! Isn't it fun trying to capture the sibs together?! We have so many photo fails of our girls, especially in the beginning. BTW, you look great!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Pitocin is NOT fun! I agree. I don't, at all, regret the epidural. It felt so much better and helped me stay stress free and relaxed which I think was good for Allie.
DeleteGreat post, love the story and glad it has a wonderfully happy ending. You look great post-baby btw! My sister just had her first baby about 3.5 weeks ago, I am forwarding her the link to moms on call, I checked it out and it looks really good. I hope it works for you!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Kudos on not having a scale! (I have one and its been a long time since I got on it. I just don't see it necessary!)
thanks! I'm looking forward to trying Moms On Call, my sister in law has had HUGE success.
DeleteIs that picture of you post baby #2? You look great! You will get there, just stick with what you know how to eat healthy. Good goal of breastfeeding. You've done this once so you are clearly a pro! Seriously. So glad the entire birth went well. You and husband are a team and will be able to conquer it, hang in there. I only have 1 little guy so I can't speak from experience.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'm trying to stay healthy although I'm betting that cookie I just ate wasn't so healthy but it was soo good.
DeleteI'm glad things are going well! I've never heard of the Mom's on call. My wife and I, with our son, split it as me before midnight and her after midnight when he was crying since I had to get up early for work. I usually ended up getting up anyway after midnight since she's hearing impaired. It was much different with our daughter. She's adopted and we got her at about 21/2 years old and she did NOT like or trust me (or any man) for a while. So, that left my wife being on a ton more than me at night.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Katie! And you look fabulous! What a beautiful family you have!
