May is Marathon Month for Me!

So Allie is officially a week old, and my Saucony Kinvara 4s are itching to go for a test drive.  The advice I got from my doctor was to listen to my body and take it slow but she said I don't have to wait 6 weeks like I did with E.

So I'm taking her advice.  I plan on starting to walk and "wog" (termed coined by Jess at BlondePonytail.com) the first week in May and will work my way up to some higher mileage by the end of the month.
Virtual Marathon

I'm looking at races in May just to get out there but I know it's going to be tough to get away from Allie this month (I'm breastfeeding) so I figured the next best thing was to register for the Joggermom Virtual Marathon that runs the entire month of May.  I figure I can get in 26.2 miles in over the course of May.  Even if all I get to do is walk, having the support of other moms doing this virtual race will be nice and for $15 registration and amazing prizes, I couldn't really go wrong.

I know we've all done virtual races and I think one of the reasons I find them so appealing is that, just like now, they are a great alternative when you just can't make a real race work.  What makes this race so great is that regardless of how you finish it or when you finish it, everyone is eligible for the awesome prizes.  (I'd gladly take that BOB stroller of their hands).

Joggermom has it right when they explain why a virtual race is good for moms:

1)Finding time on the weekend to run in a race does not always happen. This way you can run with or without your children at your own leisure. It is a race but, it is not about who finished first or fastest. All who complete the race are winners.

2) I wanted to put on the Joggermom Marathon is to give back to other Moms. May is the month all of us Mothers are recognized, why not do something for ourselves this month with a promise to become more fit? This year 10% of your entry will go to the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the #1 killer in women.

The race itself is pretty well organized,  You run all month, record your mileage on the spreadsheet they give you and then email it in when you've crossed the finish line.

Registration is open and continues thru May 15th. Oh and did I mention it's only $15 to enter and there are some SERIOUS prizes. I mean I want all these:

Diamond Prize:
§  Bumbleride Indie Stroller- All new for 2013

Ruby Prize:
§  B.O.B. Revolution SE Single Stroller

Saphire Prize:

Emerald Prize:
§  Garmin Forerunner 10- GPS running watch ($130 value)
§  $100 Amazon gift card
§  Another Mother Runner book and accessories ($30 value)
§  2 Handful fitness bras ($50 value)
And there's more!  See the full list here: http://marathon.joggermom.com/

  2. I've never done a virtual race, but, thanks to your post, I going to check this out. Can't wait to hear how it goes for you. I waited 3 weeks after both of my girls were born to start running. The first few runs were really slow and short, but I was just happy to be running again. I nursed both of my girls through their first birthdays, so I hear ya when it comes to the time constraint. I did a lot of treadmill running after #2, and I found that short workouts with some speedwork built in were a great way to get back into shape with limited time. I even ran a 5K three months postpartum and was pleasantly surprised that my time didn't totally suck. Good luck with your return to running! Just remember to take it easy and don't beat yourself up on the days it doesn't happen.

  4. Way to get back out there! Your doctor sounds like mine, who I loved! He basically told me to do whatever I wanted as long as it felt ok. I love a doctor who believes that patients actually know more than anyone about their own body!

Have fun with the virtual race! Those strollers are awesome! I hope you win one.:)
