You can check out the follow up post: Hospital Bag Revisited to see what I used and what I didn't!
I can't believe it's finally here. It's just a matter of days before Baby Nuunie makes her debut. At the latest it will be early next week but she could also come this week too. So knowing that, I figured it was time to start packing my hospital bag.
Seeing that this is my second, you'd think I knew exactly what to pack but it still took me a while to think through what it was I'd need and depending on your labor/delivery/baby plans this might work for you but I'm planning to nurse and have a routine delivery.
With that said, here's what's in my hospital bag:
1. Cute, Large Bag - I am taking my L.L. Bean extra large tote because you can bet I'll be taking everything that's not nailed down including: pacifiers, witch hazel pads, those sexy underwear, Vaseline, gauze (if you're having a boy that gets a circumcision), thermometers, etc.
2. Toiletries- All the usual (shampoo, conditioner, soap, loofah, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, hair ties, deodorant, makeup, chapstick and lotion)
3. Surprise for E- The last thing I want is E to feel left out so we made arrangements to have his new little sister give him a little present (books and trains)
4. Nursing Necessities - Nursing Pillow (My Breast Friend), Nipple Cream, Nursing bras and tanks, and hooter hider
5. Slippers and Shower Shoes - I know it's a hospital but going barefoot in a shower that's not mine weirds me out.
6. Electronics/Camera/etc - Anything you need to keep you entertained and capture your babies for moments. And don't forget the power cords.
7. Baby Clothes - The hospital will wrap your little darling in perfectly acceptable clothes but don't be afraid to bring some of your own and blankets, etc. Make sure you have them teach you how to swaddle.
8. Comfy PJ's and Clothes you don't mind being seen in - You will have visitors (or at least your baby will) and you will want to be comfortable but have clothes that you can feel comfortable being seen in.
9. Go Home Clothes For you and baby - this was difficult for me the first time around but unless you have some crazy plan to not go straight home, you don't need to pack anything elaborate for yourself. Comfortable is key. As for baby, same thing applies. You don't need to put her/him in anything grand. Chances are you're going to get her home and she'll either eat or sleep.
Things not pictured that I've made sure are packed include:
1. Bag for E..when he goes to grandma's house to stay the night while I'm in the hospital and a bag for the hubs. I didn't pack his but I know it's packed...I've seen it. :)
2. Insurance Cards
3. Money (change for vending machines, etc)
4. Mini Bottle of Wine - This may or may not be included. ;)
5. Gum/Snacks - If you know what you like, you might want to pack some of those. I'm adding granola bars, soy nuts, gum and mints (and possibly a tube of Nuun).
6. List of Possible Names - Since we don't really know what we're calling her yet, we will have the list ready to make an on the spot decision.
7. Picture Clothes for Baby Girl - The hospital will have a photog come around and take pictures of your baby. You don't have to do this but if you do, make sure you know and have packed what you think you want your little bundle of joy to be in when it happens.
The only question now is...what did I forget? What was in your hospital bag?

This is a great list! You might want to throw in a magazine or some light reading material in case Baby Nuunie decides to take her sweet time. I also recommend taking a few nursing pads. Even if your milk doesn't come in while you're at the hospital, lanolin and colostrum can leave some serious stains on your clothes.
ReplyDeleteWhen my youngest was born, we gave big sister a present when she came to the hospital. She loved having something to open, and it made her feel special when so much focus was on the new baby.
Magazines are a definite and loaded on my iPad ready to go. :)
DeleteGreat list! Make sure to pack that mini bottle of wine! You deserve it!
ReplyDeleteHa! You know that will make it's way in for sure!
Deletesounds and looks like you're ready!! you're super organized - i'm totally impressed! :) :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm just ready to not be pregnant. :)
Deletewhat an exciting time! Not having had kids yet I wouldn't know what to pack.
ReplyDeleteNo worries!
DeleteI'm due with my first baby in May, so this list is a huge help. I never thought to bring shower shoes- good idea!
ReplyDeleteYeah! Happy Almost Baby Day for you! Shower Shoes are a must for me. :)
DeleteI haven't had a baby yet, but my sister just had one last week. Her bag was similar to yours (pretty much everything the same), but I think she added some magazines or a book...something to distract her.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have thought of it all though, love the mini wine bottle idea!
I'm totally packing tons of magazines but I'm also planning on napping too!
DeleteLooks like you are all set to go! How exciting that she'll be here so soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks! So ready!
DeleteThis is great, next time I plan on packing a month before due date since B was 3 weeks early. I ended up packing hastily and forgot half my stuff - including shower sandals....which also grosses me out.
ReplyDeleteoh wow! 3 weeks?! I guess so!
DeleteI So needed this Katie! I was in Target today and froze--what the hell do I put in my bag! Thank you for posting this--especially since you're an experienced mama. LOVE the thoughtful gift from lil sis to E!
ReplyDeleteHa! I remember that feeling. Hopefully this helps. Can't wait to meet Baby Ponytail! :)
