One of the questions I get asked the most is “How much should I spend on XX (insert random fitness gear here)? I have to say…”It depends”.
One of the questions I get asked the most is “How much should I spend on XX (insert random fitness gear here)? I have to say…”It depends”.
It depends on what your primary sport of choice is, your level of activity and just overall personal preferences. Now keep in mind, I am a runner and avid weight trainer and part time triathlete. I’ll give you my opinion but to balance me out, I wanted to include some other fitness friends thoughts. Check these out first than take a look at my guide to what to splurge and save on...
Kristen, a competitive runner and blogger at www.TheConcreteRunner.com says:
“I never go out and buy workout shirts - I always just use my race shirts. I only buy running shorts when they are on sale or at target. My big splurge is on shoes and even those I try to find discounts since I always buy the same shoes.”
Genevieve, an all around fitness enthusiasts and blogger at: www.gigieatscelebrities.com says:
“I think it is imperative to splurge on at least one pair of good pants/capris- they could make a Defensive lineman's butt look good!”
Becky, a runner and blogger of www.RunFunDone.com says:
Splurge: Running shoes and nutrition (Nuun and Clif Shot Blocks are worth saving my GI system from distress)
Tara, an all around fitness enthusiast and blogger at: www.AdailyDoseOfFit.com says:
Splurge on shoes, save on clothes! It is all about fit and feel in my opinion
Madeline, a runner and all around fitness enthusiast and blogger of www.FoodFitnessandFamilyblog.com says:
Splurge! HR monitor
Alexandra Williams, a fitness professional and blogger at www.funandfit.org says:
Splurge: organic fruits and veggies. Save: apparel & music. I wait until I'm at the annual fitness convention to buy my workout wear and music because they always offer sales and discounts. But I buy the best food year-round so that my body can be at its best year-round
Gabrielle Hoffman, a Weightlifter/Crossfitter says:
splurge: sport specific gear olympic weightlifting shoes - I think you can get away with $100 vs. $200 ones in the beginning, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, weightlifting belt), quality bottoms (capris, shorts, etc), sports bras! save: tops, "fun" gear like knee socks
Debbie, a runner and blogger at http://livefromlaquinta.com says:
splurge on running shoes, but use retired shoes for the gym. I save on most fitness clothing.
Janice, a runner and all around fitness enthusiast and blogger at www.fitnesschearleader.com says:
Splurge: shoes & things that will motivate you to workout (ie: a good jogging stroller). Save: things that don't motivate you (ie: if you hate exercising alone at home, then don't bother buying exercise videos, sign up for a gym or bootcamp class instead).
Lindsay, a fitness enthusiast and yogi, and blogger at www.ItzLinz.com says:
Splurge: shoes! Protect your feet - you only have two and you rely on them to do almost everything & get you places! Save: yoga mats! Maybe itz because I'm not a "true" yogi, but I haven't found much difference in expensive yoga mats vs the cheapo ones!
So you want to know what I think? I agree with pretty much everything everyone else said:
You can also see some of my favorite fitness gear on my FitGear Pinterest Board. Check it out.
What do you think? What do you splurge on? What do you save on?

Mine are kind of in the middle... I splurge on shoes (but get them at a discount always), sports bras (no more double and triple bagging the ladies anymore!) and supplements (sensitive GI tract). I save on tops (just use race shirts for the most part since they're all moisture wicking anyways.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt I splurge on shoes and some clothing. But I do have some Target gear that is just as good as the stuff that's 10x more expensive.
ReplyDeleteLove GiGi's comment about the capris! So true! I definitely shell out the bucks when it comes to running shoes, although I still try to save by buying last season's colors or finding on sale. I've started to spend a little more on sports bras because the cheaper ones chafe me big time, plus my girls need some TLC after two pregnancies and two combined years of nursing. I try to find my running shorts on sale and always take advantage of Nike's clearance shop online. They often run additional 25% off plus free shipping. Score! Sunglasses are a tough call. I bought a high end pair of Optic Nerve glasses before a hiking trip in Utah, and they've been worth every penny. They're survived backpacking trips, marathons, a half IM, plus every day wear. I've had the same pair for 7 (!) years, but it's time to retire them. I'll probably look for another quality pair and hope I get just as much use out of them.
ReplyDeleteI think sports bras is a very important splurge item! I was a C cup pre-pregnancy and had been wearing cheaper random bras for years. Once I upgraded to nice supportive bras, it really made all the difference! (Thanks Moving Comfort!)
ReplyDeleteI also splurge on shorts. Having a nice pair of flattering shorts, with pockets, that don't give you a wedgie can be hard to find! Thank goodness for Oiselle!
I agree thought that running shirts are not really necessary with so many race shirts, but tanks are another thing that are important! Races never give out tanks and lots of them tend to ride up. It is important to find one that fits well.
It's fun to see how everyone has different priorities. I'm not a big splurger on anything, but I do have a few key items that I love...
ReplyDeleteI am totally the same! I splurge on tops, shoes and socks! I don't want any blisters!! haha :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I splurge on shoes and on certain gear, like my garmin. Most workout clothes I purchase on sale or at expos so I have a race memento.
ReplyDeleteI splurged on 3 pair of Lululemon shorts for the gym. They don't ride up and the moisture wicking fabric is amazing. I love the wide fabric waistband they have too. Recently I gave in and spent the $$ for two fantastic sports bras from Lulu as well. They were well worth it!
ReplyDeleteThis is very great thing you have shared with us. Now I found enough resources by your tips about this issue..
ReplyDeleteThank you
