I love getting older. (Are you rolling your eyes?) I really do. For a number of reasons but mostly because I have become more comfortable with who I am and what I want. As a result, I've realized that there are a few things you won't ever hear me say...
1. "Does my butt look big in this outfit?"
I will NEVER say this primarily because I don't care. Harsh? I don't think so. I have just gotten to that point in life where I know exactly how everything looks and I'm ok with it. While compliments are nice, I don't feel the need to go fishing for them.
2. "I wish I would have xxFILL IN THE BLANKxx"
I've only had a couple regrets in my life and I learned my lesson. I don't EVER want to say that I wish I would done something again. Life is too short to not try. I have big dreams and I'm not about to make excuses only to later lament the fact that I didn't try. Take risks, push yourself and you might be surprised.
3. "You can't do xxFILL IN THE BLANKxx"
I promise to NEVER EVER tell you that you can't do something because I firmly and deeply believe that you can do anything you want to. It's not always easy, you won't always succeed but when you do, you will be so glad you did. So don't come to me expecting that I will talk you down from a dream or commiserate with you about why you shouldn't or can't do something. Instead, I'll help you brainstorm, or figure out how to get you there. It's up to you to do it but I will support you 100%.
I think it's important to recognize how strong we all really are. There are a lot of people and things that would love to see us fail but I'm not about to go down without a fight and you shouldn't either.
What is one thing I will never hear you say?

This is the nice thing about aging (the old body stiffness, not so much!). You really learn to not care what others think and be yourself. At this stage I know never say never…because you just don't know!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right!
Deleteso true!! well said.. or not said.
ReplyDeleteTHanks Lindsay!

DeleteI do say, "I wish" ... a lot. You have inspired me to try--particularly on my most recent, "I wish I could travel through Italy". Maybe I need to try instead of wishing. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love that!! Do it! Italy is calling
DeleteGreat thoughts and great question.
ReplyDeleteTHanks!
DeleteI love this post! And I love people who embrace getting older instead of dreading it. It's privilege and we should embrace it! I need to make an effort to never say 'I can't"!
ReplyDeleteI love the butt thing! To ask somebody that, you'd better be ready for two possible answers! FGeat post!
ReplyDelete:) totally! :)
DeleteI hate hate hate when people say "I can't do this" or "you can't"...I always tell my students "you mean, you can't do it YET. but you will be able to after you work at it!"
ReplyDeleteI like that!
DeleteI love your list of 3 things you will never say!!
ReplyDeleteYou would never hear me say, "I can't."
Yeah!!
DeleteSometimes I feel weird because I embrace getting older and I am the only one in my group of friends who is actually looking forward to turning 30.
ReplyDeleteYou'll never catch me saying "I didn't have a choice..." There's always a choice; even if you are doing nothing, you are still choosing to do nothing.
Love this and it's so true. As I've gotten old, I've become more comfortable and confident in my skin and kind of don't care as much what others think. Only thing that I could do with out - the stiffness like Miss Zippy said!
ReplyDeletei really struggle with getting out of my comfort zone especially with respect to fitness but i have found that there's really no other way to reach your goals but to do things that you're not used to (like going for a run when you're the only person awake, or avoiding getting sucked into facebook (this was so much of a problem for me i quit facebook for a while, lol) so you can have more "me time"). one thing you'll never hear me say is probably "i'll do X, Y, and Z when [i reach some really unrealistic goal]". nothing is perfect and that's okay, because perfect is not only impossible but also boring, haha. great post!
