Oh snacking...It's my downfall. I can honestly say, I'm somewhat weak and I'm betting I'm not alone. My snacking is usually a result of cravings which, when I'm not prepared can lead to bad choices but I'm desperate to make healthy snacking decisions. My cravings fall into three categories:
- Sweet
- Salty
- Satiating
So I'm taking time this weekend to stock the house with all the goodies I'll need to fight cravings and stay full. My goal is to keep snacking to 150 calories or less and sugar to a minimum. Here's my list of go-to snacks. I'd love to know your snack ideas! Think..ready made or little prep.
Sweet:
Sometimes with the "sweet" craving I can tame it with a beverage too. So I try to think outside the box.
- Hot Chocolate
- Yogurt (I love to add grapenuts to it for a little crunch)
- Fruit (Apples, Oranges, Bananas)
- Special K Protein Cereal and Bars (Not an ad, I just love them)
- Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cereal (same as above, I like to eat them plain)
- Craisins and other dried fruit
- Protein Shakes/Smoothies (Love COLD smoothies)
- Dove Chocolate
- Popsicles, Italian Ice (real fruit)
- Wheat Thins
- Pretzel Crisps
- Edemame (with a little salt)
- Whole Grain Goldfish (my son's favorite too)
- Popcorn
- Pickles
Satiating:
- Oatmeal
- Veggies - Carrots, Canned Green Beans (I know weird, but I love 'em)
- Hummus
- String Cheese
- Peanut Butter/Celery
- Milk
- Almonds/Soy Nuts
- Chicken Breast or Good Deli Turkey
- Buy and Pre-Package - I buy the full size items and pre-bag them in ready to grab portions. It's cheaper that way.
- I LOVE COLD beverages so I drink most things, especially milk out of a frosty mug.
- Stock up Smart..Head to Sams or Costco to get some of your favorite snacks in bulk
- Invest an hour..in food prep..it's worth the time to wash, cut and prep not only your snacks but dinner components. The time you'll gain during the week is invaluable and you'll be that much more prepared with a craving hits.

If you're nursing, I know you'll need the extra calories, but remember sometimes a snack crave is really just thirst. But I know you'll have plenty of Nuun nearby!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for thinking ahead now... breastfeeding made me starving all the time! I found eating larger meals helped with the extra snacking, too. So excited to hear of her arrival!
ReplyDeleteOlives and nuts are great salty options too. My big cravings are chips and fries and other salty, crunchy goodness but in place of that I've found strong flavors like dill, garlic and curry can satiate that craving instead. Weird. My best tip is to just have the snacks I want to be eating handy and ready to go otherwise I'll default back to the crappy stuff.
ReplyDeleteI love popcorn for a salt craving!
ReplyDeleteCostco is great for buying snacks in bulk!
I crave sweet, salty and pretty much everything else too 24/7. Snacking is a HUGE downfall of mine. :/
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize BFing causes us to be even more hungry?! Is that possible cuz I'm chowing down now! Thinking of you and waiting for the labor tweet! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy fave is Kettle Corn popcorn sweet & salty. I put mine in 1 cup servings. A mix of grapes, sugar snap peas, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, string cheese and a handful of pretzels also is a go to snack for work--it lasts all day!
ReplyDeleteAgree with BF making extra thirsty and hungry. You need more extra calories when nursing then pregnant. Don't rush the baby weight thing too much. I'm on number 3. Gained 40 with each and now 4 to go this time around. It comes off if you live healthy. But enjoy your baby and learn how to balance, then worry about it.

ReplyDeleteYou've got some great snack ideas on your list. And I love to drink out of frosty mugs, even when it's just a glass of milk.
ReplyDeleteWhen my first daughter was born, I couldn't believe how hungry I was those first few weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I lost the weight. Although I do think, as long as you're nursing, it's hard to lose those last few pounds until you wean. I think your body needs a little bit extra to sustain production. But as soon as I weaned my oldest, I lost the last bit very quickly.
I have a hard time fighting snack cravings. During the week I feel like I snack more than I eat real full meals. I sit at my desk in my office and snack more than really eating. I think it works for me though and my busy schedule
ReplyDeleteMmmm, popcorn is a good one! I've been loving ice cream lately. Every night for the last few weeks I've had some. (save me from myself! haha)
ReplyDeleteI am the worst at keeping my snacking under control! I seem to be doing well, and then, BOOM, I've eaten half a tub of ice cream...I'm going to have to try and adopt these healthier snacks to keep myself on track.
ReplyDeleteAnd along with, additionally, it grows our crucial contemplating and ingenuity.
