The Feeling of Firsts

One of the things that I find so exciting as a parent is being able to experience your kids “firsts”. To see their eyes light up and realize that they are mentally recording the event in their little minds is beyond exciting. I have a terrible memory but I can recall SO many firsts and I’m excited to see my kids go through theirs as well.

But I realized/remembered, on our trip to NYC, how important it is for us as adults to continue to experience “firsts” as well. It’s not as easy because we’ve had a lot of firsts by this point in life but when the opportunity comes to experience a “first”, take it, no...seize it. No matter how big or small, there is a feeling, a twinge of nervousness that you’re stepping outside your comfort zone, a sprinkle of excitement at what’s to come and just an overall sense that you’re going to be changed in some way as a result of the experience. It’s what life is all about.

I still have a lot of firsts to experience, some I’m planning and some I don’t even know about yet and I’m sure you have some too. My challenge to you today is before the end of the year, experience a first of some kind.

What first are you looking forward to?

  1. Yes! Experiencing firsts is so important to continue to do in our adult lives. When I first learned to surf, I realized that it had been a really long time since I did anything new for the first time but it was such a rewarding experience!

  2. Firsts as an adult are so important! It keeps us young I think. A coworker of mine just went sky diving for the first time (she's about to be 60). That's something that I've always said 'maybe' I'd do. I don't see it happening before the end of the year but 2014 might be the time!

  3. Great reminder! We can definitely switch our focus to our kids firsts and forget about going after things for ourselves, too! I need to think more about what mine might be...

  4. Yes, I play the video of my kids first steps over and over again! I look forward to the first time my kids sleep past 5am. I am not hopeful, counting days or expecting. Did I mention that I also look forward to the day that they don't argue with one another at 5am?

  5. Firsts are so important. And because of that, I want to soak in my experiences before snapping a photo of them right away. ;)

  6. You're so right. One of the reasons I love to travel is to experience a new place for the first time. Not sure what I might be doing for the first time before the end of the year., Now that I've read your post I will put some thought to it.

  7. I zip-lined for the first time last summer in Alaska (and lived to tell about it). What will I do 'first' before the end of the year? This is such a fun challenge!
